Atherton Real Estate

“The Town of Atherton desires, insofar as possible, to preserve its character as a scenic, rural, thickly-wooded, residential area with abundant open space and with streets designed primarily as scenic routes rather than for speed of travel.” –Town of Atherton General Plan

In 1866, Atherton (pop. 7,194) was a humble flag stop for the convenience of Menlo Park estate owners traveling on the San Francisco-San Jose Railroad line. It?s nestled in the scenic peninsula between the San Francisco Bay and Highway 280, bordered by the flatlands of Menlo Park, Redwood City, Woodside, and unincorporated San Mateo County.

The quiet Atherton communiy is still a “plain of oaks”. Native and ornamental trees cover its six square miles of land and 49 miles of roads wind through its beautiful flora and elegant estates. This is very much a residential community–there are 2502 households, eleven private and public schools, but no industry or business establishment within the town limits.

This beautiful, peaceful community is considered the second wealthiest in the country, with a per capita income of over $112,000.
